Originally from Yorkshire, I’ve lived in North Yorkshire for 21 years, with 17 years of experience as a councillor in the area. Previously an industrial chemist, I’m married with two grown-up children living locally. I’m a keen cyclist, a classic car enthusiast, and enjoy volunteering when the opportunity arises.
The constituency is predominantly rural, encompassing several towns and many villages. Reliable connectivity and robust infrastructure are essential to ensure residents feel well-supported and welcomed. Currently, Wetherby, the main town, lacks a Leisure Hub, and the new constituency crosses two council areas, which brings competing needs that require careful balance to benefit the region as a whole.
Given the rural nature of this area, a flexible approach to my surgeries will be essential, so I’ll be establishing them on a rotating schedule, allowing residents convenient access without the need to travel long distances.
Having cycled and driven extensively across the area over the years, it’s clear that several roads could use improvement, and I have established contacts within the councils to help move these upgrades forward.
Finally, there’s the matter of public transport. With West Yorkshire’s mayor now managing services there, North Yorkshire may become a separate entity in this regard, and how that will play out remains uncertain. A sit-down discussion is certainly in order to explore solutions.
